What is happening on the markets and stock exchange right now?
OP Asset Management’s weekly report 7.5.2025.
- Neutral weight amid the Trump show
In the current climate, investors find themselves forced to choose between an easy and an exciting alternative. Market moves – both up and down –are pronounced. However, long-term investors can choose a less stressful route by ignoring market fluctuations and focusing on investment returns over time. Such investors have not lost sleep over the turmoil seen in April. At OP Asset Management, we have chosen a moderate option and do not react to every market swing. The asset classes in our portfolio, meaning fixed income and stocks, are neutrally weighted allowing us to monitor which way the economy is headed. European and emerging markets stocks and IG corporate bonds are overweight due to their return prospects being better than those of other markets. - The economy and results have held out
What is ultimately crucial for the markets is how much Trump's actions weigh on the economy and business results. The economic figures released for the US last week remained robust. Business confidence was slightly down but remained at a reasonably good level. Friday's employment data pointed to a robust job market. It is difficult to interpret economic figures amid the tariff tumult. While tariff fears have elevated some figures, they are expected to lower them moving forward. While risks of recession are projected to increase, the general expectation for now is that economic growth will slow but not grind to a halt. - Fed meeting, service sector confidence and earnings
This week's highlight is the US Federal Reserve Bank's meeting on Wednesday. However, it is not expected to produce major news: interest rates will not be touched nor are future moves likely to be discussed much. In addition to President Trump's daily announcements, in store this week are the service sector's confidence figures and a host of interesting earnings releases.
